When faced with a child who has learning disabilities most parents will try every avenue to try and find a way to help their child. With hundreds of teachers, tutors and health practitioners offering treatments, how do you know who is telling the truth, and how can you ascertain what method will help your child? Remedial reading is often the first step for a child who is struggling. However, for many children with learning difficulties this simply magnifies their agony and multiplies their feeling of failure.
Diet is also worth considering, mainly for the point of view of Attention Deficit Disorder, which can often be made worse by the child's reaction to certain foods or chemicals. Vision is one of the most overlooked areas of examination, because most people think that, if their child can see, there is absolutely nothing wrong with their vision.
The crazy thing about this is that, compared to most other testing methods, it is often the easiest and least expensive thing to test in a child with learning disabilities.
The great news is that, in many cases, it can provide the break through that your child with learning disabilities needs. Vision is the dominant sense in the classroom, and for almost every learning experience your child has.
Over 80% of all information comes in through the visual system, which involves far more than simply seeing the page of print.
As a Behavioral Optometrist, I have dedicated my life to helping children with learning disabilities, and I have found that in the majority of cases I can help these children both with the appropriate lenses and with vision therapy, a specialized series of exercises and games to train the visual system and thus enable learning to become an easier task.
It makes sense that, if we train the right visual skills, we will see the learning ability of a child increase.
So, for example, if they have trouble skipping lines or misreading words, training the child's eye movements should enhance their ability to move their eyes effectively across the page, thus reading more fluidly.
If they have trouble remembering spelling words, it makes sense that if we train and teach visual memory through visualization that they will be able to recall spelling words more effectively.
The question for parent is, "where do I go to have the type of visual examination that tests for these things? " Most parents would realize that the average eye care professional does not perform these tests, they are looking at eye health and prescribing glasses. Let me be frank; if your child has a learning disability then you need to get your child's eyes tested, making sure that they are not long or short sighted.
For the extra tests looking at the main areas of difficulty in children with learning disabilities, you will require something different.
And that is the purpose of this article.
I am passionate about helping children with learning disabilities, and have developed a few short tests which can be down loaded from our site and performed in your own home.
It can help by indicating if your child has difficulties in many extra areas of vision, and show you exactly how to improve their visual skills.
If these tests indicate a deficiency, that our therapy program is guaranteed to improve the learning disabilities you struggle with in your child. And best of all, the screening test is free, so please, for the sake of your child and their future, come and obtain your free vision test.

Educational Toys Help Children's' Learning
We live in a day and age where children are watching TV and playing video games all of the time.
Sure, it may seem as if video games and television stimulate a child's brain, but many times kids are sitting there like zombies. Unless the television show is an educational show that doesn't bore the child or the video game is something that involves a certain degree of strategy, they're not getting too much out of these two things.
Most of all, they are not exactly using their imaginations in a world that requires its occupants to be imaginative in order to survive personally and occupationally. As convenient as television and video games are at keeping the kids busy and behaved, it is time for parents to rebel. The revolt begins as the child develops by using such things as educational toys. Adults use puzzles, brain teasers, and other things that require thought to keep their minds sharp. It has been shown that adults who stay on top of their game with activities that make them think are taking an active measure toward preventing Alzheimer's.
By incorporating such things into a child's life and keeping those activities as part of their life, a parent is taking an active role in ensuring that their child's mind stays sharp.
It is also important to emphasize to that child how important such activities are as an adult so that they can take a preventive measure toward diseases such as Alzheimer's and dementia.
Educational toys Educational toys come in many different types and are available for children as soon as they learn how to grab things.
They can be something as simple as a puppet or matching shapes.
The child is forced to think and the colorful pieces that come with these toys make the activity interesting. What makes these activities even more interesting is when the parent is involved and praising the child when the child is successful.
Starting these activities early means that the child is going to get a developmental head start and will be using strategy easily by the time he or she begins kindergarten.
Your child will have the mental maturity needed to make it through the world if you start stimulating their brains early and making it fun to learn.
When kids don't have fun learning is when they have learning difficulties throughout their entire lives.
This isn't always the case, but it has been known to happen.
Many children loathe learning for one reason or another, so using educational toys can make it fun and rewarding.
Keeping it up There are educational toys for children of all ages, so it is good to always make sure there are fun educational toys around the house that are age or intelligence appropriate.
And yes, there are some wonderful brain teasers and other educational games on video game systems and computers. When the child reaches a certain age, using these as learning tools can be great.
There are also great television programs that make a child think and make learning fun. It is just a matter of placing restrictions on how much time is spent using these electronic tools and making sure there is plenty of time that you and your child are doing fun learning activities together.
By taking a time out and doing these activities with your child, you are not only stimulating their brain, but you are actually stimulating your own.
The two of you are also spending quality time together in a world that makes quality time very difficult.
So it is easy to see how educational toys can benefit you and your child in more ways than just learning.

The Practice of Gardening for Kids
If you are a nature lover, then the practice of gardening certainly brings you a step closer to nature.
Gardening is a part of horticulture that allows you to grow plants of your choice.
You can also create a lively green and soothing area near your house by sowing seeds.
The art of gardening needs proper care and practice, and a result gives you colorful flowers, fruits and vegetables.
All you require to start gardening is a certain space.
If you have a front or back yard, you can easily start working on your gardening activities. Selecting the right space or area plays a pivotal role in the process of gardening.
However, people living in multi-storied apartments hardly find any gardening space. In such cases, they can take the initiative on an apartment portico, terrace or roofs. While sowing seeds or cultivating plants on the soil, make sure the plants get sufficient sunlight so that they can grow. In addition to sufficient sunlight, make sure the soil has an abundance of nutrients and minerals.
Soil nutrients are very crucial, especially if you plan to cultivate edible parts like grapes, cucumbers, tomatoes etc.
These support your plants while growing.
Other than sunlight and productive soil, you also need to keep in mind that your plants need to get sufficient water to grow and remain healthy.
Water for a sturdy plant is as important as the requirement of oxygen for our subsistence.
The practice of gardening begins during childhood and helps the kids aware of the significance of nature and gardening in their lives. However, one of the most challenging things for the kid is to keep the soil perfectly soggy.
To keep the plants alive, water is required, but kids should be careful that they do not give too much of it.
The best thing to do in such cases is to touch the soil with your hand.
If you touch it and it is dry, then it probably needs a greater amount of water.
If it is already moist and softer, you can wait awhile before adding more water.
Kids who are doing it for the first time should know that you can place the plants into the soil either directly or through a vessel or container.
You will find most of the garden containers used in urban gardening are made of crates, empty cartons or stacks of tires.
It is always crucial for you to choose the right plants before you start digging in the yard. This is because; some plants grow better in their natural surroundings. Such plants are referred to as native species and are considered as the perfect plant for those who have just started their gardening plans.
They grow better with the usual amounts of sunlight and water in their areas. On the other hand, for cultivating non-native species, kids must be acquainted with all the basics about those plants. This includes, finding out the required amounts of water, sunlight and the nourishment needed for growing these plants.
In addition, you also need to know which types of soil suit those non-native species best. One thing that you must set in your mind while gardening is that you should never get bored.
Gardening all together includes a lot of fun, challenges experiences for kids. Those who have never tried gardening before thing initially that it sounds quite challenging for them. However, if you spend a good time in learning what gardening is, you will surely create a pleasant and refreshing environment around you.

Raising Twins With Allergies
My twin girls are four and half years old and it has been a unique and tiring four and half years. I knew it would be hard having twins but I didn't realize how hard especially seeing one of them is severely allergic to peanuts, she is also allergic to tree nuts, soy, egg, dust mites, cockroaches, birch, oak and seasonal allergies, so we were told.
Along with her allergies she has asthma caused by her allergies.
The other one, the oldest, we were also told has allergies to dust mites and seasonal allergies, along with the asthma.
I believe, Alison, the youngest was allergic while in the womb.
My husband and I went out to eat for Valentines Day while I was pregnant to the Texas Roadhouse.
Around 1 A.
M. I got violently ill I thought I was losing the babies. When I called my Ob the doctor on call told me its food poisoning call your primary and hung up. Well, I didn't because it stopped and I knew it wasn't food poisoning.
I never thought about it again until I found out Alison was allergic to peanuts when she was 14 months old.
We spent months running to the doctors with her from the time she was 6 months old until she was diagnosed.
They checked her several times for milk and soy allergies but nothing else. Babies don't eat nuts! But, their father's do! My husband would eat peanuts like they were going out of style.
Jay would take a handful of nuts as he walked into the house and go and kiss Cali and Alison. Alison would immediately breakout in hives and made this awful noise as if she was gasping for air. It wasn't until my doctor's father who was in practice with him heard her on the phone had me rush her in that's when we found out it was allergies before that they kept telling me it was a prickly heat rash.
The father diagnosed it as allergies and sent us for tests and to the allergist.
While we were waiting for our appointment day to come I started noticing what was happening with Jay eating nuts, I was already recording everything I gave Alison to eat.
When the appointment day finally came I told the doctor what happened the only rast test that was done was peanuts.
Within minutes it started turning positive. When the 15 minutes past the nurse came in looked at it and said she was allergic big time. They showed us how to use an epipen and sent us on our way.
Less than a year later we found out she had additional allergies, I read all the books I could about the peanut allergies in the mean time. My favorites being Alison the Elephant is Allergic to Peanuts, Pete's Allergic to Peanuts and the Peanut Allergy Handbook.
The girls love the first two books and know Alison's allergic.
She made the decision herself to stop taking off her Medic Alert Bracelet last year.
I would take it off each night and one night she told me I couldn't take it off of her.
It hasn't been off since.
Cali will actually recite the list of Alison's allergies. Cali knows she might have seasonal allergies but watches everything for her sister.
The hardest allergy to watch for is Soy with all the different forms of Soy it is hard to know which are safe for her and which are not. Eventually, we changed allergy doctors and found out it was only soy flour she needed to stay away from. In watching all the food for Alison I have stopped watching the food for my husband and myself.
Being a Weight Watchers Lifetime member I have been watching my intake very carefully for 9 years.
I stopped that last year because I couldn't check ingredients for Alison and calories for myself and get through the store in decent time.
My children come first, as with most mothers.
I have to tell any parent that is wondering what is going on with their child be persistent with doctors. My daughters are on their 5th primary care doctor.
o The first my husband wasn't crazy about.
o The next I wasn't.
o Doctor number three we loved but he didn't believe us about what was going on with the girls and discarded our concerns.
o Number four helped with some things but not the allergies he treated us like he could care less about our children and we were just pains in the neck. o Doctor number five we absolutely love! Our daughters love him! He cares and he found allergies, he found asthma.
He didn't ignore our concerns he's always been there.
When I thanked him for caring his only response is that's what I'm here for. If you have a concern about your children find a doctor who you can talk to, one who is going to sit up and take notice. One who cares! Keep track of anything that is out of the ordinary make lists of all they do, eat, what ever is concerning make lists of everything that has to do with it.
I've made lists after lists about things for the girls some of the doctors paid attention others didn't.
We made lists of when they received their bottles, how much they drank, peed and pooped.
If they paid attention to the list they would have realized Alison had allergies earlier than they did.
Two signs of allergies, constipation and eczema Alison had them both, not to mention fussy eaters.
(When Alison got older she refused to eat certain foods.
I later found out there was an ingredient in them that she was allergic to.
) I was always proud that she would rather have fruit than a sweet. I would make cookies and cakes and she wouldn't eat them.
.
.
because of the egg, she was allergic to it.
We didn't know but she knew she didn't want to touch it for some reason.
Eventually, it was 50-50 whether she would eat the sweet because I started using Greek Yogurt instead of eggs.
I put a little more than 1 tbsp of yogurt per egg. Some people use bananas, some applesauce, I've used Buttermilk in some of the foods.
I know there is a flour, baking soda or powder and water mix you can do but I could never remember it.
A great book for this allergy is Baking without Eggs.
It has a recipe in it for Chocolate Cake everyone loves.
My hat is off to the author! I kept Alison away from eggs for a year she out grew that allergy.
It was so worth the time it took to make changes in our life to help her. I have to give doctor #4 credit he did put Alison in speech therapy when I was concerned about her not really talking and she was almost 2.
Now there are days I say please stop talking.
But, I'm so glad she doesn't.
Doctor #3 wouldn't do anything about her speech when I asked about it.
He said give her another year to learn to talk.
I couldn't do that what if there was a problem that's why we finally left him.
I'm so glad I did.
She didn't talk because her sister was a jabber mouth.
It's hard having twins! It's hard have twins with allergies and asthma! Some days we were eating and eating just to get energy because we were up all night because of their asthma.
But, I'm so glad I am persistent and do keep records of anything that concerns me.
It's the only way to get answers when your child is out of the ordinary and has peanut reactions when she is kissed by someone who just ate peanuts at 6 months old.
As for the Asthma both girls are out growing it.
It's been almost a year since we have used a nebulizer I just hope I never have to take it out of the closet again.
If you have a question or want to get in touch because you have the same issues I'd love to hear from you.
It's a small world that people don't understand when they don't have to deal with it. You can contact me at: http://www.

Back to School - Easy Crafts For Kids
Going back to school can be a scary time for any child. It's a big change as well as a stepping stone.
A parent can also be affected by this change. It means your child is growing up and they are going to learn new and exciting things. There's a great way for your child to be prepared for going back to school or starting school for the first time; make it fun. Start crafting with your child. Craft some fun back to school easy crafts for kids.
There are so many options out there.
When I was young and starting school for the first time I was very nervous and excited at the same time.
I wish there were as many creative easy crafts for kids back then as there is now.
Nowadays kids are able to craft with trash. By taking recycled goods around the house they can create the darndest things. Take for example a recycled school bus.
It can be crafted out of a spaghetti or pie crust box.
This is a very clever craft and it will get your child used to seeing a school bus so they can have fun with it. It can also be a scary time meeting new kids in a new school. Make your child smile and feel comfortable by making an I.
D.
tag.
These are such great kid's crafts.
They can help make them and write their name on it, so they can easily find their backpacks and belongings.
If I had a name tag on my things it would bring a smile to my face. Even a child as early as preschool may not be able to read, but at least they can identify the picture on the tag.
I have so many nieces and nephews that I love so much.
Most of them are going back to school, while others are just starting school for the first time.
I love crafting with them when I'm babysitting.
There are so many easy crafts for kids that they get so excited when I bring a new craft to do.
The latest one was a terra cotta bee pot.
It was so cute with its wings and wiggly eyes.
They needed a little help with it, but what craft doesn't need help from an adult? They helped with the painting and putting on the foam sheets.
I thought it was such a cute craft that they can bring to school for show and tell.
These bees are great back to school easy crafts for kids.
And although the bees are made with terra cotta pots and they needed to be gentle with it, they still had tons of fun shaking it to watch the wiggly eyes move around.
So keep in mind if you are nervous about your little one going back to school or starting for the first time, they're probably even more scared than you. Have fun with it. Make them feel as comfortable as possible by making easy crafts for kids.
There are so many free patterns out there for you to choose from, there's no way a child can get bored creating fun crafts for school or just preparing for school. There are different skill levels for crafts as well.
So hurry up and put your little one on that yellow school bus.
After crafting that recycled bus out of a spaghetti box, they'll wave bye to you as they step foot on the school bus with a big smile on their face.

Vintage Pinball - The Missing Link
The thing about Vintage Pinball machines is that they are great to look at, wonderful to play, but they are getting harder and harder to find to play one.
Local bars have stopped siting them and the local arcades have stopped placing them also, preferring gaming machines instead. It's a real shame because up to the mid nineties they were to be found absolutely everywhere.
So what went wrong? The bubble burst for the coin op amusement business in the mid nineties with the advent of the Sony PlayStation and then the Xbox, Wii etc.
All of a sudden you could buy top quality games to play at home, so why go to an arcade to shovel loads of money into a machine.
That was the first nail in the coffin. For pinball machines the problem was one of over supply and poor quality manufacturing which, meant numerous engineer callouts to replace parts and the site owners just got fed up with machines being constantly out of order.
It was a double whammy.
Having worked in the UK coin op amusement industry back in the nineties with one of the main distributors, I had the opportunity to witness first hand the rise and fall of the pinball machine from the lofty heights of the Addams Family Pinball which was a phenomenon that outsold everything else, to a slow but steady decline in demand in subsequent models.
Having sold many pinball machines around that time all over Europe, it was the same problem everywhere, too many models and poor quality control during manufacturing.
The Vintage Pinball machines were quite often scrapped and replaced with the newer ones which didn't work any better, they just looked nicer, a lot of the older models ended up in Africa in countries where they were still considered a bit of a novelty.

The Flexibility Of An Online Education
Consider your current career. Now, add a traditional education to your current work schedule.
It's impossible to organize, isn't it? Well, that doesn't have to be the problem anymore.
For business people who want higher education, they no longer have to add the schedule of a traditional education (visiting a campus) to their current work schedule.
Now, online classes are available and provide the greatest flexibility possible. Never attend another class on a campus.
Sit down at home with your computer and get the education you want.
Online business degree programs are tailored to fit your schedule.
Take as many classes as you can, depending on your work schedule, and finish the degree at your convenience.
If you have less time, don't worry because you can take fewer classes and still receive the degree you want. Sit down, look at your schedule and decide how much time you have to dedicate to your education.
Once you know, then you can plan.
Take your planned schedule and begin to speak to advisors and look for classes that work with your schedule.
You will find the classes you need. The greatest benefit of online classes is the ability to complete coursework whenever you have time.
Come in from work, eat some dinner and relax, and then get started on your coursework. Work at your own pace and know what you need to get done for the class.
Build yourself a schedule for what you need to accomplish and finish the class with great performance. Having the flexibility to take class online around your work schedule is the best part.
Never miss out on the career you are in, continue to make money for your expenses and climb the work ladder with your developing education. What do you think about the flexibility? Thousands of people are signing up a year to take classes online because they allow them to continue with their life and receive education at the same time.
Flexibility is key in such a busy world.
Whether you are raising a family or single, the flexibility is great for everyone. No one should leave a quality position to return to school and risk losing that position forever.
Keep your position and get educated at the same time. Is it for you? If you're not sure at this point, take time to consider all the details of an online education.
When you learn more and speak to others about it, then you can make an educated decision.

Convex PolyHedron and Mathematical Optimization
Maximum or minimum value of a polynomial can be derived using calculus or linear algebra.
A convex polyhedron can be thought of as a n dimensional object in a bounded plane.
Algorithms such as the Simplex are based on traversing the polyhedron from vertex to vertex using certain methods in order to determine the extreme points.
There are other methods that are based on traversing the polyhedron by cutting through the polyhedron. These methods use the steepest gradient to determine incrementally the path to traverse to determine the extreme points and are called as interior point methods.
Convex polyhedron are geometric structures that have a definite maximum or minimum.
So, finding out an extreme point is very easy using a combination of calculus and linear algebra. When the polyhedron is characterized by straight lines the paradigm of convex optimization is termed as Linear Programming.
The polyhedron can also be quadratic that provides some simple minimums.
An example of quadratic polyhedron is a parabola which has a minimum point no matter what.
Random algorithms do not follow any rules to locate the extreme points of the polyhedron but use some random ascent and descent methods. So, how can business problems be formulated. Let us take the example of a factory that is producing two products. Product A yields P1 dollars of profit and Product B yields P2 dollars of profit.
Product P1 uses H1 hours of labor/unit produced and Product P2 uses H2 hours of labor/unit produced. Now we need to determine the optimum production mix that would maximize the profits given that only L hours of labor is available per week.
In addition, we are also given that we can produce only a maximum of M1 of product 1 and M2 units of Product 2 per week based on the demand.
Mathematically this reduces to some equations.
The objective function becomes Maximize: P1Q1 + P2Q2 ( 1) Subject To: Q1H1 + Q2H2 < L (2) Q1 < M1 (3) Q2 < M2 ( 4).
By plotting equations 2, 3 and 4 on a graph sheet one can see that it would form a two dimensional object. Since an extreme point cannot lie inside the two dimensional polyhedron the maximum value of the straight line (1) will be on the vertexes of the bounded two dimensional polyhedron. One can inspect all the edges using a brute force method and determine the maximum value of 1. On the contrary one can also use some special techniques to arrive at the solution by not traversing via all the edges.
This was essentially what we discussed in the first two paragraphs of this article. Analyzing properties of convex polyhedron such as volume, finding out the vertexes of the polyhedron can provide us with many interesting solutions in optimizing many business problems.
In real life business scenarios the number of edges can go to as many as 10000 and the number of dimensions can also be as large as 1000. There is a lot of research underway to determine the best possible method to compute the volume of a polyhedron or determine the fastest way to determine the maximum or minimum value of a function given that the solution lies on the vertexes of a convex polyhedron.

How To Become an ITIL Expert
The ITIL Expert certification is one of the hardest IT related certifications to obtain. It requires months of dedication and a passion for IT Service Management. To become an ITIL Expert you need to first pass the ITIL Foundations exam and then obtain 22 credits from either a Lifecycle stream or an Capability stream and then pass the daunting Managing Across the Lifecycle (MALC) exam. I am going to take you briefly through my journey and what I did to final obtain my ITIL Expert certification.
As I am in a management role I decided that the Lifecycle steam was the one I would follow. I would ideally have like to follow the sequence of Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition, Service Operations and then Continual Service Improvement but the establishment I completed my training were not so good as scheduling courses so I had to mix them up a bit. I started on schedule with the Service Strategy and this course I found extremely interesting.
Although the venue was shocking I do have a passion for strategy so I put that in the back of my mind and focused on absorbing as much information as possible.
The course is 3 days in length and you need every minute of it.
I decided that I would do the course and then write the exam the following Friday which would give me a week to study and revise what I had learn't. My learning plan as such paid off and I managed to get 100% for the Strategy Exam, talk about getting a big head!! I will let you in on my study secret at the end. After the strategy module I completed the Service Transition module which for me is the most interesting but is 3 days of death by PowerPoint. From my experience Service Transition is overlooked in most organizations and yet is the most important.
I managed to get 77% for this exam which was good as it bought me down to earth after the 100% for strategy.
Next was Service Design which was also an interesting course and a slight bit of PowerPoint numbness but overall interesting.
Again not many organizations apply Design and the benefits can be seen when completing the course.
The Design exam was extremely difficult and I scraped through with 70% (the pass mark).
That said the venue where we were writing the exam was shocking.
The exam is online and their Internet connection was so slow it took 20 minutes just to open the exam! The connection kept dropping and we couldn't save our answers.
I finally got a decent connection through a 3G card and then just rushed through the exam without checking anything as the last thing I wanted to do was postpone as this would mess up my whole schedule. Anyway I passed and that was the main thing.
I managed to arrange onsite training for Continual Service Improvement (CSI) so I managed to complete this course in one and a half days compared to the three days. This is course is more a summary of the all the others modules.
The exam was tough but fair and I passed easily with 80%.
The last module I completed was Service Operations which I found extremely easy.
Service Operations seemed to be ITIL v2 in one and as I have been exposed to ITIL this was a walk in the park.
To be honest I hardly opened a book for the exam and managed 90%.
Last was the BIG beast, Managing Across the Lifecycle (MALC).
This is a five day course and the exam covers all the previous modules.
I gave myself two months gap before doing MALC and this I found was the perfect time frame, not too long to forget everything and not too short to be burnt out.
MALC was tough indeed and I was given some advice to skim all the modules but really focus on Service Strategy and CSI. I followed this advice but decided to also do Service Transition in a bit more detail. Finally, after 6 months (a record I hope) I passed the MALC exam with 75% on my first attempt.
As MALC has only a 55% pass rate I was very pleased with this result.
So after 6 months I had completed my ITIL Expert Certification and I am now happily applying what I learnt in my current working environment.
With commitment you to can obtain your ITIL Expert certification, make it a goal, put your nose down and go for it! Oh yes what is my study secret? Use the Van Haren summaries for the exams.
These are condensed versions that you can read through in an hour or two and are great to revise just before the exam.
Use your class notes and the textbooks to go in detail and then use the summaries to tie everything together.
Good Luck.

A Scooby-Dooby-Doooo Scooby Doo Party
With a theme like this one you should be able to start off with finding some Scooby Doo party invites.
If you want to make your own, you could start with a question mark, and have the theme based around a mystery. This theme can be carried through out the entire party.
They mystery you could base your Scooby Doo party around could be that Scooby Doo's favorite food is missing.
This can be some large dog biscuit, you can hide a dozen or more around the party area, who ever finds the most can get a prize! Now that you have your invites ready for your Scooby Doo party, make sure that you mail them two to three weeks in advance.
Now you can get ready decorating for the party.
If this if for a young girl, then you can have large flowers, balloons, posters of the characters. If your party is for a boy, then forgo the flowers.
If you're in doors, maybe think of getting some color light bulbs.
Anything that will give your party a cool feel! There are other games you can play for you're Scooby Doo party, if you're extra creative you can make a large Scooby Doo and play pin the tail. Change a round some older games and try Scooby Says and other fun ideas. How Much Homework is Too Much Homework?
One ten-year-old girl had so much homework every night she cried.
She switched to a school with less homework. Now she's stopped crying and has time to play with her friends after school and get her homework done too. Are your kids doing so much homework they have no time to play? Does the amount of homework they get done help them do better on tests? Educators across the country are asking these questions. And many conclude that a moderate amount of homework helps children develop important study habits and time management skills. But that homework doesn't necessarily mean they learn more or do better on tests.
Researchers collected math and science data from schools in 41 countries. Students in Denmark, Japan, and the Czech Republic had the highest math scores and the lowest amount of homework.
And now administrators at some of the fanciest private schools whose students often go on to Ivy League colleges are saying "no" to hours and hours of homework every night.
The National Education Association guidelines suggest that homework through grade two should never be more than 20 minutes a night.
No more than 30-60 minutes a night for grades three through six. High school depends on the subject and the number of AP classes a student is taking. The American Academy of Pediatrics supports these guidelines arguing that daily free playtime helps kids' emotional development.
Clearly the experts agree that all kids from kindergarten through high school need homework most school nights.
But it needs to be meaningful and doable in a reasonable amount of time. Is homework geared to the ability of your kids? Does it have a purpose? Or is it just busy work? Have the kids been given enough instruction in school that they can understand the homework and complete it? So it's time for you to establish a place for doing homework, a daily time for doing it.
Music if it helps.
No music if it's distracting.
And off with the cell phones! Having a homework routine makes homework easier.

Environmental Training - Becoming EPA Certified
Getting the right environmental training can make all the difference in your EPA certification.
When it comes to something as serious as working with the environment, there is a lot to learn. There are procedures and regulations that are not flexible that must be taught by a qualified professional training center in order to get them exactly right.
Some people think that any program will do, but there is something to be said for finding the best environmental program to gain EPA certification.
Not only will you be better educated, but you'll likely also have a more reputable stance within the industry because of the training that you received. If you want to be the best in your industry, you need to train with the best.
Becoming EPA certified is not a difficult task, and when you choose a top-rate training program, you can guarantee that it will be that much easier. The field of environmental courses covers policies, regulations, and practices of environmental work. The training in this industry is largely regulated by the (NESHTA).
This group was established by the EPA in 1977 to promote trainee competence through five areas of education.
Skills training, certification, continuing education, networking, and standards adoption are the five areas that the NESHTA bases training competence on.
OSHA courses, drinking water, wastewater, solid waste, source water protection, and preventing pollution are other topics that should be covered in environmental courses.
Hazardous waste and materials courses might also be offered for those seeking environmental certification, depending on the program that is sought.
Obviously, the more training a person has, the more useful their certification will be. Working within the EPA industry is all about understanding environmental issues.
If you go the extra mile to learn more about these topics, you'll likely find better careers and higher positions available to you. Whether training is required or not for your job, it can improve your standing within the industry. If you take the steps to become EPA certified and properly trained, you will likely have a much better career. Every state and specific job will dictate what you need training, depending on the statutes and regulations of their area, state, or industry.
If you are aiming for a specific position, you need to get the right course for that particular career. If not, EPA certification and environmental training can still be beneficial to your career.

Believe It or Not, Lots of Attention Makes a Child Weak
A Deeper Look at Personality Styles in Parenting.
.. Recently, I talked with John, a very frustrated dad. He described a recurring incident with his six-year-old son, Aaron, that just made him want to climb the walls.
This particular afternoon, Aaron and his friend, Suzanne, were playing at her house.
When Suzanne's dad came home, he told the kids that he'd take them to McDonald's. Aaron's mom, Rachel, said she couldn't go.
Since everybody involved knew that Aaron wouldn't go without one of his parents that meant he'd have to ask his dad. Although Aaron is only six, he already understands that he can get pretty much whatever he wants from his mom or dad if he just uses some of his favorite manipulations.
He started crying on the walk across the street.
John heard Aaron's wailing before the front door opened.
Aaron ran into the living room and threw himself on the floor.
John asked Aaron twice, what was wrong. At that point Rachel mentioned the invitation.
John said: "Aaron, talk to me.
" Aaron cried harder.
John told him to ask or they wouldn't go anywhere.
Aaron hushed himself to a snuffle but wouldn't talk. The stalemate continued until finally, John said, "Okay, Buddy, we can go.
" What's Wrong With This Scene? Aaron got exactly what he wanted using manipulation: the crying. Or, put differently, even though Aaron's behavior wasn't responsible, he had the power over his dad. John not only did all the talking but he even reinforced Aaron's manipulative behavior by "giving in.
" Look at the process between John, Rachel and Aaron.
Aaron created an unnecessary scene that made everyone uncomfortable, including Suzanne and her dad.
John tried questioning, coaxing and, finally, threatening Aaron.
Aaron ignored him. In the end, John, not wanting to disappoint his son, assured Aaron that, yes, they could go to McDonald's.
John is a really Pleasing parent.
Both parents realize that the way they're behaving isn't helping Aaron to develop cooperation and responsibility; they admit to being confused.
They give in because they don't know what else to do.
Aaron is indeed a powerful kid; he has trained his parents to serve him. Solutions.
John and Rachel need to understand their son better.
They both feel a lot of anxiety when Aaron cries or screams or throws himself on the floor or runs away. But eventually, they feel impatient, frustrated and angry. Nothing they try "works." Why? They both think if they talk to Aaron and explain what they expect, that will "work.
" No! Aaron already knows what his parents want; they've each told him many times in many different situations. Aaron doesn't care about what they want; he's focused on getting what he wants.
Aaron gets a feeling of power when he "wins.
" And, Aaron knows (senses) UNconsciously that his parents want to be generous and give him what he wants.
They love him and want him to be happy.
So, he just has to "hold out" long enough to get it.
How do these parents turn this situation around? John and Rachel: must step back and stop talking. Aaron already knows how he should ask.
He doesn't need teaching.
stand firm and calm when Aaron tries his variety of manipulative behaviors, refuse to acknowledge his tantrums.
In others words, refuse to "pay off" any manipulative behaviors, embrace the idea of consequences. Give Aaron the choice of a time-out chair or his room until he decides to do the right thing. learn to say "No" in a friendly but firm way and mean it.
It's true that most people, not only children but also adults, will stop behavior that isn't rewarded. They reason, usually UNconsciously, that if what they're doing isn't getting results, it isn't worth the effort. Aaron's a smart kid, as most are, and will eventually see that he gets more "goodies" when he behaves appropriately.
Or, at least he gets fewer uncomfortable consequences. Then, John and Rachel can reward "good" behavior.
The household won't be in chaos as it is now. Parents, don't be discouraged if this takes a while.
If you do it in a confident, "take charge" but calm, kind and friendly way, your child will eventually come along.
Just keep your eyes on the end goal: cooperation and peaceful relationships.
Big Thoughts In This Article.
Parents, when children manipulate, they generally either want Attention or Power, sometimes both.
Decide to deal with that desire instead of whatever they're asking to do or asking to get out of.
Don't give attention; back out of power struggles.
Speak less.
Chances are very high that your child already knows what you want. You've probably said it over and over.
. Understand that children are very clever and persistent about getting their way.
Don't respond.
When you give consequences, give choices.
That gives the child power to decide what his consequence will be. It shows respect and fairness.
Stick to it.
It should work over time.
All the best until next time, Joan

7 Secrets for Raising Responsible Teenagers
There are many ways to raise a child, and every child is different.
Therefore, there is no magic formula for raising good teens.
Excellent parents can still have problem children, and good children come out of bad homes. But by staying closely involved in your children's lives, even when they don't appear to need you as much anymore, you'll be teaching them the lessons they need to learn to be the successful and happy adults you'd like them to be. Here are some pointers for keeping teens on the right track: 1. Love them.
Tell your teens that you love them every day.
They may be too embarrassed to return those words at this stage in their lives, but it's temporary.
Some day, they're going to remember that you always told them you loved them, no matter what. When they do something wrong, emphasize that you still love them, even if you don't love their behavior.
Teens tend to overdramatize when they're yelled at and say, "You don't care about me.
" Make sure they understand that you can still love someone even if you're not happy with their actions.
2. Don't be afraid to set limits.
You don't need to be your teens' best friend. If you feel uncomfortable about them going somewhere, put your foot down.
Sometimes, they really want an excuse to tell their friends "no," and what better reason than, "My mom won't let me go!"? Don't be afraid to be the "meanie.
" It means you care. 3. Get them involved in something outside themselves.
Teenagers benefit greatly from attending religious youth groups or community-based teen groups. These groups often place a strong emphasis on thinking about others while having fun. Mission trips and community service opportunities often become some of the greatest experiences of teens' lives and a good lesson in seeing that others have it much worse than they do.
4.
Emphasize the importance of family. Kids need an anchor, a sense of belonging to "something." Stress the fact that your family is a team. And encourage your kids to spend time with their extended family, such as grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins.
Eat dinner together several times a week, and talk about your day rather than watching TV.
5.
Make them help out.
Your kids may tease you by saying that you wanted kids just so you'd have household help, but don't let that discourage you from insisting that they participate in taking care of the home.
Teens are old enough to do their own laundry, clean their rooms, scrub the bathroom, do the dishes, and anything else that you do.
You're doing your kids (and their future spouses) a favor by teaching them how to take care of themselves and a household.
Don't back down just because they complain or do a shoddy job.
All family members should be required to pitch in.
And don't give them allowance for things they should be doing anyway, like keeping their rooms neat.
Give them cash for extra jobs, like mowing the lawn, washing the car, etc.
6. Respect their choices.
Let's face it: Our kids are never going to be the little clones we'd hoped to raise -- people who would act and think exactly as we do! Teenagers are constantly trying to figure out who they are and what they believe.
Don't criticize their choice of music (unless it's particularly violent), hairstyle, clothing, etc. Take a look at your old high-school pictures, and you'll see that your own children's experimentation is perfectly normal! Yes, they're still kids, but they want to be treated as adults.
Exerting total authority over them is bound to backfire. For the things that are temporary, let them have the choice.
Blue hair will grow out. (Tattoos, however, won't.
Say "no" to them.
) 7.
Teach them about future consequences.
Kids need to know you won't be taking care of them forever.
Express the importance of education to enable them to get a good job.
Explain to them how their actions today greatly impact the future. They're not likely to be able to have the things they want if they have a criminal record or lack a high-school diploma.
Show them how much a car and a house cost. Go over a monthly budget with your children so they see how much money it takes to feed a family, pay the utilities, provide housing and transportation, and so on.
Kids tend to take these things for granted.
They need to think about how their parents are able to provide these things, and how they'll be able to do the same when they're adults. Today's world provides many temptations and poor examples for adolescents, but parents are still kids' most important teachers. Your teens need you now, more than ever, to be present in their lives.
The appropriate balance of love and discipline will allow your teenagers to grow up in an environment where they will blossom into caring and responsible adults.

History of Trampolines
Jumping on trampoline is quite exciting as it offers sheer joy that completely engulfs a person who is voluntarily going up and down on a trampoline. Believe it or not, the trampoline was originally used as a method of punishment in the medieval days.
The act of 'blanketing' was meant to toss the offender into the air, of course involuntarily.
There are some references to this in the literary works such as Don Quixote where Sancho Panza was thrown into the air from a blanket. However the exact origin of the trampoline is difficult to ascertain as a lot of people have been credited for inventing it. Trampolines were used for various purposes for nearly a century after being invented. They have been used in the military as aviation training aids for pilots and navigators, who would train on them to face the difficulties while on flight.
The trampolines have also come handy for training astronauts and cosmonauts of both the American and the Soviet space programs.
The "In flight positions" which the astronauts can expect in the space were simulated on a trampoline.
Today, however, the most significant usage of a trampoline is in the entertainment industry. Children love playing on a trampoline and they simply enjoy jumping to and fro on it.
However as much as they do enjoy it, near fatal accidents may sometime happen. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons has recently in a report rated the trampoline to be the source of the third major amount of accidents. Most children that met with an accident were in the age group of 5 to 14 years. Most kids love watching TV and they try to imitate what they see on the TV.
They perceive that it is a way of expressing themselves to their peer group.
The more daring you are, the more cool you seem to be! However as parents there is nothing cool about your 5 years old son lying unconscious in the backyard with a serious injury on the head.
Naturally, safety comes first when playing on the trampoline. There are safety gears and padding available at the sports stores. You can get helmets, joint guards and also safety padding to ensure that over anxious kids do not get injured on them. Even if they are a slightly over the budget ensure that you buy them to avoid any untoward incidents.
Trampoline is a fun game, and as long as the safety of the kids is ensured, it certainly provides pure entertainment to the kids.

Video Game Tester Jobs Review
For a while now video game tester jobs have reached the attention of the interested public. It is a fact that game developers discovered that game testers are essential to find and report errors in early stage of production and development.
Who are more qualified for that job than gamers who actually have gaming experience? Fortunately game developing companies see this as well so now they actually look for gamers to provide them of detailed information to make sure that errors are found in time and better versions of the games hit the market a lot sooner. You can also see that some game developers adjusted their websites to make the job searching part of their site a lot more user friendly.
For you this means you can browse for different game companies and search for available video game tester jobs.
Why would you want to apply for video game tester jobs? Well, obviously you have a passion for video games and you like the idea of testing games for a living, otherwise you would not be here.
Also if you work as a game tester you have a better chance to get to use the resources the company can offer to grow and become a designer or programmer later on if you are interested.
Salary is better than most jobs which can be $10 - $30 an hour for the starting game tester.
In some cases you can receive the game for free or cheaper than retail price and in sometimes you can work from home.
However the best part remains: You will get paid to play video games.
What do you need to become a video game tester? Of course the idea of testing video games for a living beats most scenarios of working in most other jobs, but certain qualities are expected.
If you choose to use the PC as your working system, you are expected to know how to use it and naturally it would be wise to use that PC for work purposes only. Game developers expect their game testers to provide them with quality observation reports with detailed information.
Where is the bug, what does it look like, when does it happen, why does it happen and can you explain and report it in usable way? Further you must have a lot of patience to do these video game tester jobs.
For instance: Imagine a bug in the game that requires you to reboot the system like 15 times.
Without passion for game testing this could be a problem. What is the Conclusion? Give it the best you got.
Video game testing is a serious job and it comes with responsibility but fortunately also with a lot of fun.
Determine the goals you wish to achieve within the company and make sure that your employer knows about them so you can be supported in that.
Every employer favors the goal oriented. Research has been done for you so you can just read up and if you made up your mind about applying for video game tester jobs you can make your choice.

The game then goes into your collection of purchased games to collect dust or if you are lucky, get played by friends and family members when they come to visit.
Fortunately, we have online game rental services available to us today that can save us a lot of money and allow us to play many more games. You simply play the game until you are ready for a new one.
Once that time comes, you mail the rented game back, select a new one and watch the mailbox.
It really is just that simple.
These services give you reader reviews and information about the games to help aide you in your selection.
Should you chose something, play it for a day and decide you do not like it, simply mail it back and get a new game to try. (adsbygoogle = window.

push({}); Overall, the online game rental services are well worth the small monthly membership if you are a gamer.
They provide you with an awesome selection of the hottest games on the market. You will pay for the online gaming rental service if you play only one new game a month if you factor in the cost of a new game.

Communication With Children And Adolescence
Whenever I am asked for one "key" to successfully navigating the waters of raising children and also adolescence, I would say "communication". Allow me to explain.
..
I am a single mother with four children and I struggle to find quality time for each child.
However, at the beginning of each week as I plan my weekly strategy (and, yes, I must plan to be an effective parent), I mark of hour slots for each child. I plan to spend one hour with each child every week, just one on one. We might walk on the beach (this is a good one if you have boys; they will much prefer walking and talking to sitting and talking), sometimes we go to the shops and walk and talk, other times we just drive. The kids know that this is our time to chat about life and whatever they want including sibling rivalry issues, school troubles, etc.
I find that because I take the time to be with my kids individually, this gives me the right to discipline then when I need to. And when we take the time to listen to our kids they will in return listen to us. What gets us in pickle is when we try it the other way around - when we demand that our kids obey us BEFORE building that relationship.
We must get things the right way around, first earn the respect of our children.
Only then will we reap the rewards of open and honest communication between parent and child.

Do Kids Prefer Online Learning?
Online learning is becoming common in school education.
It has some clear advantages for educators, and studies suggest that blended learning - a carefully judged mix of traditional classroom teaching and online tutoring - is more effective than either one alone.
There is also some evidence to suggest that a significant proportion of college students prefer online tutoring services and one-to-one interactions with tutors online.
But what do kids think about online study? A 2008 NACOL symposium investigated the growing number of school students who opt to take all of their classes online.
They cited a variety of reasons for this choice.
They included: • Online learning means students can study at their own pace • The option of creating their own schedules.
One, heavily involved in sports, was getting up before dawn to get practice in as well as fitting in the school day. Another needed to earn as well as study and found online teaching more flexible and convenient. • The possibility of taking courses that were not offered at their bricks-and-mortar school.
For some students who have a clear idea of their career path, online learning permits them to specialize earlier, giving them a potential college and career advantage.
Of course, school-age learners are diverse and full-time online study isn't for everyone.
Learning online does not suit all students, for the following reasons: • Online learning requires self-discipline, time management skills, motivation and a degree of maturity that not all learners yet possess.
Those who have not developed the skills can easily become frustrated. • The social environment of conventional schooling is absent for school-age learners who take all their classes online. • Online teaching makes interaction with online tutors and teachers feels too distant and impersonal.
As noted, studies suggest that, on average, the most effective education is a combination of conventional classroom education and online teaching.
Online learning alone will boost some learners' educational achievement, but impair that of others.
Blended learning typically offers the best of both worlds.
Instead of a 'one-size-fits-all' education, the solution seems to be that giving students some choice, to match their aspirations and learning styles, is the way forward. Courses that are well-designed for the online learning education environment can have certain advantages for learners.
Problem-solving in the guise of educational computer games can breathe life into a dry subject. Of course, computer-aided learning can also be incorporated into conventional lessons, and most educators are aware of the power of computers in engaging learners. At the same time, there is sometimes no substitute for instructor-led, human contact in the classroom.
Even though online tutors can make the most of interactive technologies and video links, face-to-face teaching allows educators to pick up nuances of student behavior that are easily missed in the online teaching and learning environment. On the other hand, the hallmark of online learning is personalized attention from online tutoring by teachers.
The benefits of learning at one's own pace, and of schedules and curricula that suit individual learners' needs make online learning the preferred choice of many. Some will prefer conventional education. The reality is that, online teaching and learning becoming an integral part of education, many school students will have the best of both worlds.

You do not need to have any work experience or to have a particular educational background to be able to test games.
All that is required is that you really love to play video games, you have substantial experience with the media, and that you are willing to record the various bugs in the game and where you have encountered them.
For parents who have been worried about the future of their children who are addicted to playing video games, this development could usher in an era where playing games could result in a lucrative future. Video game companies need game testers to be able to avoid the costly damage to their reputation if a game released to the market proves to be a flop - because of several bugs that could have been eliminated if a gamer had tested it.
Thus, game companies are willing to pay you good money to test their games and you have the benefit of choosing your work schedule.

Only time will tell if you might be able to apply this knowledge in the future when you may want to establish your own video game company.
Playing video games has indeed evolved into a potential career path that young people may follow.
